Mahendra Singh Dhoni popularly known as MS Dhoni is an Indian cricket player who was born on July 7, 1981 in Ranchi(Jharkhand). He served as the former captain of Indian cricket team from 2007 to 2016 in limited-overs format and from 2008 to 2014 in Test cricket. In 2016 a Bollywood biographical sports movie was released named “M S Dhoni: The Untold Story” written and directed by Neeraj panday which was based on true story of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Mahendra Singh Dhoni Early Life:

MS Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Bihar( now in Jharkhand). His father name is Pan Singh who served in Junior Management position  in MECON. His mother name is Devki Devi and having a sister named Jayanti Gupta and a brother named Narendra Singh Dhoni.  Dhoni childhood idols were cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan , singer Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh.

Dhoni started his schooling at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, Ranchi, Jharkhand. In his school day, he was excellence in Football as a goalkeeper and in Badminton. He used to play Football for his school team. His Football coach noticed his goalkeeping skill and asked him to play cricket as a wicketkeeper for the school team. After that Dhoni wicketkeeping skill in a local match have impressed everyone he played Commando Cricket Club (1995-98) as a regular wicketkeeper.

As his father forced him to focus on his cricket as well as on study because Dhoni belongs to a middle class family. Dhoni started focusing on his cricket after his 10th standard. His friends  and elder brother Narendra Singh Dhoni supported him so that he could focus on his game. His performance got better and better but still he was unable to make a chance in India under-19 team due to lack of power of Bihar Cricket Association.

Later Dhoni got a job as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) from Sports Quota at Kharagpur Railway Station. He served as a TTE from 2001 to 2003 under a South-Eastern Railway in Midnapore, a district in West Bengal. He continued his cricket practice after his working hour. Later he decided to fully focus on his game so he left his job and came to his hometown Ranchi.

MS Dhoni cricket Career

Bihar-Jharkhand Cricket team:

From getting 50 rupees for hitting each six for CCL team by Deval Sahay, Director of Central Coal Limited (CCL) to finishes match off in style for team India he made so many records. By his hard-hitting six, Deval Sahay used his contacts in Bihar Cricket Association to push for his selection in Bihar team. Dhoni was included in Bihar U-19 squad for 1998-99 season and scored 176 runs in 5 matches but his team was unable to make place in quater-final. As a result he was not selected for rest of any tournaments.

In 1999-2000, Bihar U-19 team made their place in final in Cooch Behar Trophy against Punjab U-19. Dhoni played a magnificent inning of 84 runs to help Bihar a total of 357 runs. Dhoni future Indian squad teammate scored Yuvraj Singh scored 358 runs in that match results in a total of 839 runs for Punjab. After that series, Yuvraj Singh get a call from India U-19 team. While Dhoni once again fail to make a chance in India U-19 team.

Ranji Trophy:

In 1999-2000 season, Dhoni made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar as an eighteen-year old boy. In his debut match against Assam Cricket Team, Dhoni made his maiden half century scoring 68* runs in second inning. Dhoni ended the season scoring 283 runs in 5 matches. He also made his maiden first-class century while playing for Bihar against Bengal in 2000-01. Apart from that, his performance was not so good in any season till 2002 as he also served as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) in those years.

India A Team:

After his performance in 2003-04 season, he was recognized for his efforts in One-Day format because of his hard-hitting capacity. This results him to got a chance to play for India- A for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. Dhoni showed his wicket-keeping skills by his 7 catches and 4 stumpings in the match against Zimbabwe XI in Harare Sports Club.

 

After that against a tri-series involving Kenya, India-A and Pakistan-A, Dhoni scored two back to back centuries and a half century. At an average of 72.40, he scored a total of 362 runs in 6 innings. His brilliant performance received attention among others from Ravi Shastri and Saurav Ganguly, captain of India Cricket team at that time. However, India-A Team coach Sandeep Patil recommended Dinesh karthik as a wicket-keeper batsman for India Team squad.

ODI Career:

In a tour against Bangladesh in 2004-05, Sourav Ganguly suggested Indian Team selectors to go for Dhoni as a wicket-keeper batsman. Dhoni made his ODI debut on Dec 23, against Bangladesh at MA Aziz Stadium. Unfortunately he started his ODI career as a run-out for duck in his debut match. The series was not good for Dhoni, in spite of that he was selected for Pakistan ODI series.

Start of “Dhoni” era:

In the second match of the series against Pakistan, Dhoni scored his maiden International century of 148 runs in 123 deliveries in Visakhapatnam. His magnificent inning includes 15 fours and 4 big sixes. He also became the player of the match in that match for his outstanding knock of 148 runs.

 

After that, in a bilateral series against Sri Lanka he was promoted at no. 3 in the third ODI. India chased down a total of 298 runs easily as Dhoni finished that match in his style scoring a total of 183* runs. It remains his highest individual runs in ODI till now with 15 fours and 10 sky touching sixes. He was awarded as player of the match for his match winning century. He also set a record of highest individual runs of 183* in 2nd inning till now. For his brillient performance throughout the series, he became the player of the series.

Dhoni was rewarded as B-grade contract given by BCCI in Dec, 2005. This two back to back hard-hitting centuries in two consecutive series get attention by every cricket fans. The long hair boy from Ranchi got his new identity and millions of fan after this knock.

In year 2006, a bilateral series against Pakistan, due to his consistent performance,  Dhoni became no.1 in  ICC ranking in ODI just after 43 matches which is still a record. World Cup 2007

India unexpectedly ruled out in the group stage after their looses to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Dhoni scored just 29 runs in 3 matches and also got duck in rest of two matches. After losing match against Bangladesh, some political activists fired and damaged his new constructing house in his hometown Ranchi. The local police arranged the security for his family after that incident.

He recover his poor performance soon by scoring a winning knock of 91* against Bangladesh in a bilateral series. After that Dhoni was named as vice-captain of ODI team against South Africa. In June, 2007 he was also awarded as ‘A’ grade contract by BCCI.

Twenty20 World Cup 2007

He was also elected as the captain of the Indian squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in september 2007. This was the debut of Dhoni as a captain of team India. As senior player like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman had take their name back for this world cup. Dhoni lead team with the younger player at that time. Putting his great leadership skills with the team, India won the T-20 World Cup 2007 with the younger team.

World Cup 2011

India has a good start to the tournament beating Bangladesh in the group stage. India make their position in the final of the world cup. On 2 April, 2011 India beat Sri Lanka in 6 wickets in the final and take the title of World Cup 2011. India the lift the World Cup for the second time after 28 years. Dhoni was awarded as player of the match for his crucial team winning knock of 91* runs in 79 deliveries.

It was the Dec, 2014 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Melbourne where Dhoni says Good-Bye to Test cricket in his style. The whole Nation were in shock because after that day India will always miss the service of  Dhoni as a Captain and player in Test Cricket.

In an interview, Suresh Raina said that Dhoni comes to him in the mid-night and told him about his retirement. He slept that night with the Indian Test Jersey and also he had test ball in his hand.

Dhoni IPL career:

In 2008, it was the first season of Indian Premier League (IPL) and Dhoni was the sold for $1.5 millions (INR 6 crores) to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was the highest paid player in that season. The year 2008 was awesome for Dhoni as well as CSK as the team perform very well under his captaincy and have a lot of support from his fans. CSK manage to made his place in final of IPL 2008 but unfortunately team lost the IPL title in a match deciding ball. Rajasthan Royals won the first ever title in 2008 under the captaincy of Shane Warne.

Dhoni was the face of Chennai Super Kings for the first eight editions of the league, leading them to two titles (2010 & 2011) and four runner-up finishes. It is not only about achievements but the way this man has carried himself as well as his team it requires a tremendous effort . There are lot of qualities MSD has and we cannot talk about it because it will require a book in short one quality that stands out for me his throught in his career he reamained same starting from a debut duck to a not out 24 in his last test innings his .
